LA PRESSE AND ITS FUTURE ACCORDING TO ANDRÉ DESMARAIS

May 15, 2018

THE PRESS AND ITS FUTURE ACCORDING TO ANDRÉ DESMARAIS…
By Bernard Bujold-
According to André Desmarais’ confession in an interview in The Globe and Mail (May 11, 2018), La Presse had no way of becoming profitable because of the small number of potential readers in Quebec and this is the reason for the transfer of the company to a foundation. The question that arises: “If the population is not large enough to make a private project profitable, how can this same population finance with its donations the same company that has become a non-profit organization?
The conclusion is clear: La Presse is condemned to disappear permanently when Power Corporation will no longer be the money funder!

ELECTIONS QUEBEC 2018

May 10, 2018

ELECTIONS QUEBEC 2018 –
By Bernard Bujold-
It is good war for politics lovers to talk about the election result of October 1.
No! I will not be a candidate and I am not in favor of any particular political party, contrary to my beliefs at the American level…
On May 10, 2018, according to my political instinct, I expect a re-election of the current Prime Minister Philippe Couillard. It is too early to come up with a figure as to the precise number of MPs to be elected for each party, but there is no reason to consider a defeat by the current government.
Indeed, an election in Quebec, as elsewhere in North America, is never a vote “FOR A CANDIDATE” but rather a “VOTE AGAINST”. We do not choose, we reject! The example of Valérie Plante in Montreal is the most recent while the majority of voters did not vote for Plante but against Denis Coderre. (Many regret their vote and look forward to 2021…)
For this reason of the reasoning in our electoral choice, I foresee that Philippe Couillard will be reelected.

FLOWERS ON ST JACQUES STREET
By Bernard Bujold-
We know that spring is well established when flowers begin to appear on St Jacques Street in the financial district of Old Montreal and that the florist takes his tables outside and the colors invade his kiosk. Good spring 2018!

LA PRESSE – MAY 8, 2018

May 8, 2018

LA PRESSE – MAY 8, 2018
By Bernard Bujold-
The date of May 8, 2018 will go down in history as the date of La Presse’s abandonment by Power Corporation.
Indeed, the idea is great from a financial point of view but tragic in terms of the future of Quebec media.
The formula chosen by Power Corporation to get rid of LA PRESSE and regain its losses of $400 million is copied directly from the US formula of a media like PRO PUBLICA founded in 2007 by one of the Wall Street Journal editors, Paul Steiger, who had left the WSJ when Rupert Murdoch acquired it in 2007. The operation of PRO PUBLICA is entirely funded by donations from wealthy business people.
However, it requires a strong market and if the United States can effectively support this kind of media, the situation is not comparable here in Quebec. The closest example of a Quebec non-profit media outlet would be Le Devoir and we all know its financial difficulties.
Clearly, Power Corporation has just emerged from a major financial problem but there is reason to believe that the long-term future of La Presse is seriously threatened not to say condemn to close or at the best to merge with one of two Montreal universities.
To be continued.
